This is the process of aligning and straightening crowded teeth using orthodontic wires, otherwise known to everyone as ‘braces’. It is also the process that deals with and corrects; over or under bites, overlapping teeth and irregular or misaligned teeth.
In general, this treatment starts with children in their early teens, as the problems have already arisen and the earlier these are corrected the better. Orthodontics cures common problems like jaw pain; from teeth growing at different speeds, or facial pain from the (TMJ) temporomandibular joint.
Age is not an obstacle to the straightening of teeth or the wearing of braces, but your dentist will recommend that is best treated at a young age. It is far better to start the treatment at an early age, rather than ignoring it. As an adult your bone stops growing and it is more difficult to move the teeth around and through the bone.
If you are unhappy with your teeth, then braces or an orthodontic appliance of some description could be the answer for you. We all want a beautiful smile and the perfect smile starts with straight teeth that align with each other, top and bottom.
Braces either push teeth apart to provide gaps for other teeth to move into, or to close gaps and overlaps.
Orthodontic treatment on average takes from a few months to several years or more. Following your period of treatment, your dentist will fit you with a retainer. This will have to be worn for a further period of time, ‘but generally only at night’, this will keep that perfect new smile of yours in place.
Our orthodontist is extremely proficient in producing appliances for children with special needs.
Sometimes there is a problem with older patients who realize that they need this type of treatment, but who are somewhat shy to wear them, because of their occupation, or that they feel a little too old to wear braces.
Invisible orthodontics are readily available in all of these cases, having the minimal time possible to complete the treatment.
